Thicket Hill Farm is nestled in the trees of a small town, Casco, about 30 miles from Portland, Maine, in the heart of the Sebago Lakes Region. We have the best of both worlds as we're surrounded by a woodland paradise and just a short walk away from a beautiful lake. Our family owned farm is focused on one thing: raising only the happiest and healthiest pigs so you know you are feeding your family the best pork.
We raise 8 Large Black pigs, a docile and hearty breed, that love the simple life. They are happily woodland raised on a diet of premium swine feed, acorns, leaves, and all of the other woodland goodies they munch on around the farm, as well as fresh well water on demand. And yes...you read that right, rather than water bowls that they love to play with more than drink from, we have a watering system that allows the pigs to gulp up as much water as they want, whenever they want it. On a weekly basis, we rotate all 8 pigs through 5 areas of our property so they benefit from fresh areas with new roots, grubs, and the various other natural treats...they certainly don't get bored or hungry! :)
Fun fact about this breed: They rely on their sense of smell and hearing more than their vision because their big black ears tend to cover their eyes. They are also super friendly!
Wondering "what is a thicket?" or "why a pig farm?"...great questions! A thicket is a dense group of bushes or trees, and we picked the name because our dream was always to raise our family in the woods where our neighbors were trees and animals, which is exactly what we have. We love where we live, and pour that love into our family and our pigs. So, the bigger question... why a pig farm? It's important to us to raise our kids to respect the land and where their food comes from. We have about 5 acres and it's heavily wooded, so we had to think creatively about what animals to have on our little farm. Pigs were the best fit for our family and our land.
For 2018, our pigs will grow into the fall and be ready to fill your plates and freezers in late October. We recommend that you pre-order to be sure you get exactly what you want as once the meat is gone, we're out until next season.
Why pre-order? Simply put, it allows you to make sure you get exactly what you want. Options include ordering a whole or half pig, or picking from one of our packages.
If you choose a whole or half pig, we'll have it cut and packed as you'd like it (for example, smoked or unsmoked, or for sausage you could choose breakfast, hot, sweet, maple, garlic, or ground... and so many more options!), and expertly packaged and frozen.
All meat is processed, smoked (if selected), and packaged in a wonderful local USDA inspected facility that's family owned and operated, and thanks to that, we can both give back to our community and ship anywhere in the US!
